Relationship between Jews and Community of Christ

December 11, 2002

This article is a discussion of my understanding of differences between the Jewish religion and the Community of Christ. I would like to make this a comparison between Christianity and Judism, but I cannot in part because I don't know all Christian religions, but also the differences between the Jews and Christianity is quite often the difference between the Community of Christ and other Christian religion.

This comes after an informal study of Judism that I made which was sparked by a book that I read by a Jewish Rabbi. The book caused me to do some soul searching because, although the book claimed to tell the difference Judism and Christianity, I found myself agreeing with the Jewish view in almost every case, to the point that the only differences that I could see were cultural differences. (I have to admit that some of the differences were real. That is, speaking of Christianity as a whole rather than the Christianity that I understand and believe the differences may actually exist.

This difference is also stated I believe in my comment on the Book of Hebrews, but this comment is directed more specifically at the differences rather than the comments on a particular book.

First, the differences are really minor. However, unlike is commonly believed, I tend to see Christianity and Judism as brothers rather than saying Christianity came from Judism. This does not diminish Judism, much as the fact that I do not diminish my brother by acknowledging him as such.

I have to add (because I have heard people trying to claim that the Jews in Isreal are not "true Jews") that I do not, and cannot, view Christianity as the Jews of prophecy. This view is very much taught by the Book of Mormon. However, Christians also have a legitimacy.

Therefore, what is the difference. The difference, and the only real difference, is that the Jewish Community rejects the idea of a Priesthood. Christianity, in general, does not. Therefore, Jews have Rabbis, which are teachers, but the Church has Priesthood. To be honest, I do not understand the actual practical difference between Rabbis and Priesthood, Therefore I cannot at this time go further into this.
