Like most people of some intelligence, I like to think about the future, and what it will hold. Personally, I think the future will be quite nice, as the problems we are currently facing are solved, although there may come a rather tough time between now and then. In this respect, I think William Strauss and Neil Howe have it right in their books, Generations and The Fourth Turning, where they show that history is cyclical, and predict (based on the cycle) that the next few years, the fourth turning, could have serious problems. (The last two fourth turnings were the Great Depression and the Civil War.) But, after the fourth turning is the first turning of a new cycle, which was a time of pulling together, and prosperity. And, also, a time to come to grips with new truths. |
